Empowering Girls. Transforming Gender Norms. Preventing Gender-Based Violence.
Poverty, early marriages, and GBV (Gender-Based Violence) are tightly connected.
After COVID-19 lockdowns and 2 years of school closures, many girls never returned to school.
This puts them at higher risk of:
Early Marriages
Exploitation
Economic dependency
Abuse and GBV

Automotive mechanics is a high-demand skill in Uganda, yet girls and young women remain significantly underrepresented in this field. Through this program, we are changing the narrative by empowering girls to confidently work with tools, diagnose vehicle problems, perform repairs, and build careers in the automotive industry.

Building and construction have traditionally been male-dominated trades. This program challenges that norm by giving girls the opportunity to learn, practice, and excel in construction skills that contribute directly to community development, housing, and infrastructure.

Electrical work is a critical skill across homes, businesses, and infrastructure, yet women remain underrepresented in this trade. Through hands-on training and mentorship, the program empowers girls to confidently work with electrical tools, understand power systems, and apply safety-first practices in real-world environments.

Plumbing is a highly practical and income-generating trade, yet girls remain underrepresented in this field. This program challenges gender stereotypes by giving girls hands-on experience with tools, systems, and techniques that contribute directly to improved sanitation, public health, and sustainable livelihoods.

Through the Girls with Tools program, Smart Girls Uganda is equipping girls and young women with practical welding and fabrication skills, enabling them to design, build, and repair metal structures while creating pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and industrial innovation.
